YAKIMA, Wash., JUNE 10, 2020 – Washingtonians for Dr. Raul Garcia released a statement today, in which the candidate candidly addressed mistakes that he said make him a better man, physician and leader.

“It is better to own a mistake than to hide it. I am a candidate for Governor of Washington State. As I ask for your vote, I say that I am human, and I made a mistake in September, 2014, which resulted in a conviction for reckless driving. By the grace of God, no one was hurt, and I was humbled. I was driving from Yakima to Sea-Tac to catch a flight when the police pulled me over for driving while under the influence. This event made me a better driver, father, husband and physician. No one needs a tired person weaving across the dividing lines on the highway. My family, friends and colleagues know of this incident and still give me their complete support to run for Governor of Washington.

“Another mistake I’ve made is not voting consistently. As I focused intently on a demanding and time-consuming profession, I looked at voting as a privilege, and didn’t always take advantage of it. I thought that was just my loss. But the longer I’ve been an American, the more I’ve realized that it’s not just a privilege, it’s a responsibility – my most important one as an American citizen. The conflicts before us have called me to public service, especially at a time when the knowledge that I have gained as a medical researcher and physician have so much value in the public debate. But my decision to run for office has been in part driven by the desire to make up for the mistake of not exercising my right to vote – one that I will never make again.

“One of my competitors has made an issue of my mistakes. I’m assuming that, as a human being, he has made mistakes as well. But I plan to follow the advice of Ronald Reagan and not speak ill of a fellow Republican candidate. I hope to receive the same courtesy in the future.” said Dr. Raul Garcia-R, candidate Washington State Governor.
